Our first evening walk of the year was a visit to the Bollin Valley, starting at Twinnies Bridge. Perhaps unusually we turned left to follow the river upstream (instead of downstream towards Quarry Bank Mill). It is always interesting to take a different route and hopefully find something unexpected.
Plants seen included Male Fern, Cow Parsley, Pignut, Bluebell, Daisy, Butterbur, Dandelion, Alder (very large trees), Forget-Me-Not, Garlic Mustard, Hairy Bitter-cress, Cuckooflower, Red Campion, Greater Stitchwort, Gorse, Beech, Ground-ivy, Ramsons, Ribwort Plantain, Brooklime (leaf only), Germander Speedwell, Slender Speedwell, Meadow and Creeping Buttercup, Bird Cherry and Cleavers.
After returning to the car park a few of us stayed a little later, and started walking downstream, first on the right and then the left bank reaching a pleasant boardwalk through a very marshy area which yielded much interest in a short distance:
Hart's-tongue Fern, Broad Buckler Fern, Greater Stitchwort, Pendulous Sedge, Marsh Horsetail, Herb Robert, Yellow Archangel, Pink Purslane, Wood Sorrel, Wood Speedwell, Wood Millet, Wood Anemone, Marsh Marigold, Lesser Celandine, Water Avens and Opposite-leaved Golden-saxifrage.
Birds seen during the evening:
Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Mallard, Grey Heron, Common Wood Pigeon, Carrion Crow, Black-billed Magpie and Grey Wagtail
